Q: Imac mid 2011 grey screen and vertical lines, then hangs.

I have a mid 2011 27 inch imac (10.7.5) and I was initially having trouble with it not waking after sleep. However, now it won't start! I get grey screen with vertical lines, then it just hangs and I can't do anything. Tried to download the graphics firmware update 3.0, but "page not found!"

Thanks Kappy - this definitely could be the issue as my purchase date and serial number correspond to the affected imacs (just my luck) Will take it to my local genius bar I guess...

You were right! Just got back from Genius Bar - they are replacing both the graphics card and the logic board at no charge. Just have to wait for them to be ordered in unfortunately. But fingers crossed problem will be solved by the end of the week :-)

I am having the same issue. Taking mine in tomorrow to have it fixed. Question, I'm unable to get mine to work long enough to get some stuff backed up, did they wipe the hard drive on yours? I really hope not.

No the hard drive was all fine - all info there after it was fixed. Of course they don't guarantee this...... but in most cases there isn't a problem. Just let them know that you couldn't back up when you drop it off.
