i turned off my phone when it was updating, now it wants to restore everything to factory setting is this normal? what do i do?

I tried updating my phone, but it was taking for ever and i really needed to make a phone call, i decided it turn it off and now it only starts off to the connect to itunes screen. Once I connect it to itunes, it wants me to restore to orignal settings, Wont that delete everything?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

When updating the iPhone you should never interrupt it at all during this process as a result would be what you are having now with the iPhone being in recovery mode.

Because of this unfortunately you will now need to restore the iPhone to get it back working and because it is in recovery mode your data is already gone sorry.
