If you have an genuine Windows 7 System Builder DVD, you can use Boot Camp Assistant (Applications>Utilities folder) to install Win 7 using Boot Camp or you can install it as a virtual machine using something such as Parallels Desktop (I chose the latter).

If you want to install windows 7 use BCA. Parallels is virtualization software, BCA is Apple partitioning software with built in driver support to enable you to install Windows on your Mac.

I don't find any reason not to use a virtualization application. Morever, it's the best option for most users that don't require the use of heavy applications, as you can run Windows and OS X at the same time. Also, for unexperienced users, the Boot Camp installation may be even dangerous because of the partitioning steps and create headaches related to drivers. On the other hand, you need at least 4 GB of RAM recommended to run Windows 7 on a virtual machine, and if it's possible, use more RAM in your MacBook to improve performance.

This is why I find BCA preferable (in comparison to Parallels, atleast), though I agree with the rest of your points:

You have linked us to a site that describes a problem with old Parallels versions, not applicable to Parallels Desktop 8. To avoid kernel panics, simply keep the application updated and check its compatibility with a new OS X version before upgrading. With this, you will prevent the 99% of kernel panics and problems.

Other virtualization apps that work properly are VMware Fusion or VirtualBox

That's a link for ancient versions of Parallels. I use Parallels 8, up-to-date, and the very latest version of Mountain Lion, and run Win 7 Pro under Parallels 8 24/7 with no problems whatsoever.

Don't steer people to problems with outdated software, please. You have your opinion, I know, but find out the facts before denigrating different ways of accomplishing the same thing.

Yes, the problem continues however. These threads are ridden with Parallels 8 kernel panics. I agree that fault doesn't solely lie with Parallels. As always, user negligence needs to be taken to account. All you need to do is google 'Parallels 8 kernel panic' to see that the problem persists. If anything, Parallels should adopt stricter system requirements to avoid many of these issues (IE Adobe and CS6 GPU requirements). They could improve the reputability of the product by limiting deprecated hardware from running it.

Fair. I should say that I never actually stated I supported BCA to VMware. I just pointed out the difference based on the OP's question. My original response was only that.

Kernel panics happen - Parallels support has always been great in providing solutions (as your links show).

I agree with mende1, again. VMs are, in general and Parallels in particular, more 'user friendly' than Boot Camp.
