I am opening a Word document in Pages, and it has "Sample" across the first page. How do I remove this?

Pages hasn't put that there so it has come from Word.
It probably is a textbox, possibly behind the rest of the material on the page.
Hold down the command key and drag the cursor in from the edge of the page and see if you can lasso it and then delete it.

Unfortnatel that does not work, it is behind the text, (see attached). As far as I can see it does not exist in the orignal Word doc that I have opened on another mac using office??
"edge of the document" in this context means in the margin, outside of the text area. Place the pointer in the margin and press the Command Key. The pointer should change from the Text Insertion cursor vertical bar to an Arrow cursor. Now drag across the page and the text will be ignored while the background object will be selected. Then press Delete.
