HI

I had purchased an Apple iPad Mini Wi-Fi 16 GB White, model no. A 1432 Part No. MD531CH/A, Serial no. DLXKHAWEF 196 from Beijing Apple Store in June 2013.

I lost it in Shanghai in People's Square Area near KFC on 17 Aug 2013, 9PM. It was reported to Apple by phone and a request was made to lock the device. They said locking was not possible and as a precaution, the data on iPad could be erased. It was agreed and the data was erased. As a result my i-phone-5 also stopped functioning. However, I could restart my i-phone on 18 Aug morning with the same Apple ID and password.

On 18 Aug, I approached Apple Stores people in People's Square Shanghai, where they said that it cannot be located. I am very keen to locate it as I took lot of photos of Shanghai Bund Area Skyline in the night.

As an experiment, I switched off my i-phone - 5 and was able to locate the same even in off-mode. If this is possible, why the IPAD is not locatable. The Apple ID for Iphone and Ipad is same.

If someone has found, please let me know and I will happily pay for its delivery to Langfang where I am living.

Please suggest:

1. How to locate the lost iPad or

2. How to retreave the photos.

Thanks,

Lal Singh

If you erased your ipad - there is no more of "YOUR" ipad. There is just ipad without any information that can or can not be found by you, or police, or any stranger. Since none of us users, nor Apple has capability to look for it, you may want to report it to the police. Chances are -you are not getting it back. In that case it is recommended that you change your passwords.

As far as your photos, if you backed up your ipad to icloud you will be able to restore those back to new device, you will replace your ipad with.

When you lock your device or erase it, request is made by you, you need to login to your account and press buttons. If something makes you uncomfortable do not agree. Whatever you were suppose to do to erase, would not stop your iphone from functioning, so you may want to recap to yourself your actions.

Thanks for this good piece of information.

My iPhone-5 had stopped working consequent to data erasing on iPad. This suggests that my iPhone and iPad were linked through iCloud ID.

Agreed that data from iPad is erased, the device number is not changed. Is it not possible for Apple to locate based on the device number?

As an experiment, I switched off my iPhone and was to locate it.

I am interested to get back my photos taken on 17 August evening. I expect that Apple can restore my photos to my Apple ID. Kindly advise what should I do.

Thanks,

Yes they are linked, but the process of erasing data on one device - does not erase or affect another. Perhaps something else did.

As I previously mentioned it is not possible.

That is because you didn't erase it, If you want to experiment, backup your phone to icloud and erase it. You or apple or anyone will not be able to locate it. Then you can restore from icloud backup and everything will be back to normal and you will be able to locate it.

Apple can not restore anything, it is your information and you can restore it as long as you made a backup. Once you get yourself a new ipad - restore from icloud backup (if you have one) and you will get them and all the rest of your stuff back.

It is strongly recommended that you change your passwords for everything you have used on the ipad and report stolen/lost device to the police.
