Q: I've used the AirPort utility to set up my time capsule but when I click on the capsule, instead of "continue", it just shows me the capsule configuration and I can't move forward.  Help!

I am trying to set up my Airport Utility.  I am to the point where I am to select the Time Capsule and click to continue, but when I click the capsule it does not continue, but rather just shows me the network, IP address, serial number etc.  I am stuck.

What version of AirPort Utility are you using?  If you are not sure, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number that you see there.

What version of the Time Capsule do you have?  Is this new "tower" shaped version, or the "square" flat version?

It is version 6.3.1 (631.4).  The machine itself is the square flat version.  Sure appreciate your help!

    Thanks for the info.

If you see a Time Capsule icon on the page when you open AirPort Utility, that would indicate that the Time Capsule has already been set up previously either by you or someone else.

There is no "Continue" in AirPort Utility 6.3.1.

What is it that you are trying to do at this point?

Thanks for telling us there is no "continue" feature on this version, we've been trying everything to get it!!  We are trying to partition the time capsule....

Let's back up here just a bit, please.

The Time Capsule is already set up.

When you open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon, a small window will appear with information about the Time Capsule

Click on Edit in that window and another window will appear with tabs across the top for different functions, in case you need to make a change to the basic setup of the Time Capsule like change the wireless network password, for example.

We are trying to partition the time capsule...

For most folks, that is not possible.

To do that, you would have to open up the Time Capsule case (voiding the warranty)

    Pull the hard drive

Install the hard drive in a separate caddy or enclosure

Connect the caddy directly to your Mac

Use Disk Utility to partition the drive

Remove the drive from the caddy

Reinstall the drive in the Time Capsule

    Hope it works

Unless you are an experienced technician, and you don't care about the warranty on the Time Capsule, trying to partition the drive would be a very bad idea.

Well we feel just plain silly.  At our 1 on 1 session, which my husband attended, the Apple instructor advised him to partition.  Under the disc utility there was supposed to be a partition option and we were to click (+) and type in 1000 GB and 1000 GB, then "apply".    Sounds like we should ignore this.

Step 3 was to "click clock" -> preferences -> use backup disk.   We can't find a clock.

    In over our heads??

If you open Disk Utilty......Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.....can you even "see" the Time Capsule?   I think not.

I suggest that you pass on the "Partition" idea until the instructor can reveal more details about his secrets. He might be talking about a "disk image".  Not the same as a "partition"....but he may say it is.

The "clock" should be up at the top of the Mac's screen. Looks like this:

    Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 5.28.01 PM.png

Click on it, then click Time Machine Preferences.

If you do not see the "clock", you can locate Time Machine Preferences as follows:

Click on System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

    Click on Time Machine

Time Machine Preferences would be where you select the Time Capsule as a destination disk for your Time Machine backups of your Mac.
