best headset with mic to use with macbook pro

I tried using my iPhone earplugs/headset with the headset jack on my MacBook Pro retina 13-inch and the in and out sound quality was fine. I just found them to be uncomfortable for a long Skype call, and was thinking of buying an actual headset instead.

It seems like a waste of a USB port to buy a USB headset if there is a perfectly good headset jack on my MBP. Is there any reason to?

Good heatset mics very nearly dont exist.

If you want quality audio at all, mid-level grade USB mic is the best route.

And the use of headphones seperately.

Best mic sub-200$ is the Zoom H2n

Macbook Air uses a headset jack if you want a headset mic/headphone setup.

the downside being most mics on headsets are ubiquitously bad quality.

The PRO mics for laptops/ computers, most of them plug in via USB, not the headset jack.

SONY ICD-SX712 is a great choice (best "cheap" mic Ive found)

The control switch on that looks nice.

I'll check it out. But I'm now also curious about bluetooth headsets. You know - less clutter and cables. But I hear the sound quality isn't as good as USB headsets. Is that true?

Nope. I decided after trying a couple that there is no such thing as a good blue tooth wireless headset for talking. The quality isn't there, and the lag makes things annoying. I returned the ones I tried and ended up with a plain old USB headset which works fine, at half the price of the blue tooth ones I tried.

I think that's the range mine was in. I got a Logicool one. I went for best head comfort after trying on about 10 of them in the store. And I am also using a hub now - so just stick it in before a conference call.

I just purchased the same head set as J_10w mentioned, the Plantronics Audio 478 to use on my Macbook Pro. I cannot get it to work. It is showing up in the sound preferences, but nothing happens when I change the input/output to the usb. Any help?

I have had good luck with my Plantronics Audio 478. It uses USB and works great with my MBP.

+1 looking for simple (and small) bluetooth headset/mic combo for wireless calls and conferencing on Macbook Pro
