I am trying to set my poster frames for my movies that I have imported into itunes and then watch on the ipad. When I try to set the poster frame it doesn't seem to take?
Also, when looking at the movie thumbnails on the ipad it has chosen one frame for multiple movies. I need to have a the image for the movie so my son who is 5 can pick out what move he wants to see since he doesn't read yet.
any advice would be welcomed!

You can't set the poster frame of videos purchased from the iTunes Store, muxed (multiplexed) videos including MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files, and 3GP videos.

Hello, I am also having the same problem. I followed the link above and right clicked on "Set Poster Frame" but nothing happens. It looks like the poster frame is the very first frame of the movie which is just all black. I am using Window 7 64 bit with iTunes 11.0.5.5. The video is an MP4 I converted from one of my daugther's DVDs.

Playing around with it some more if I go right click > Get Info > Artwork > Add... and then pick a picture it will update the poster frame. I am just playing the movie and pausing on a clip I want and then doing a print screen > Save as jpeg and going from there. Would be nice to do it with a single click though 🙂

Thanks! That worked out great. I ended up playing the movie and took a selection screen shot (Command-Shift-4) of the frame once I paused it. thanks!!in my config, setting the poster frame also dosn't work UNLESS I give the video a star reccomendation, then magically the poster frame sticks 🙂
Adding to Massimo65 - thanks, you helped a lot...I have had same issue where I can set Poster Frame in iTunes for some movie thumbnails and not others (these are all my own home movies and include .mov and .mp4 files).
For those movie thumbnails that would not 'hold' the poster frame, this is what worked for me :
1. Set the poster frame by playing and pausing the video then right click and 'Set Poster Frame'
2. Close the quicktime player window (the poster frame you selected above won't show up)
3. With the thumbnail for the video still selected- right click, choose ratings and give the video any "*" rating you like
... the poster frame selected in Step 1 will reappear and stay there 😉
