Hi, I have the same problem with my 512M iPod Shuffle.
I didn't find a solution on this page ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301267).

What heppened: I connected it on another laptop because I wanted to reset it and synchronized with a differend iTune. Everithing was OK - it erase it but when I restarted my PC I wasn't able to access it. So I tried to restore its firmware but I had this error. I tried the same thing on the other PC (where the iPod worked) without success. The same result I had and with my laptop on the work - so 3 copleately different PCs - the same story. FYI: It was formated as a key memory at the same time as a MP3 player, so now I can see Removable Disk in the Windows explorer but the is nothing inside.

Please HELP! User uploaded file Do I have to throw it away?

Hii

Please have a try on these steps..

1. Reset the IPod thrice and then connect it to the computer/Laptop.
2. Then Format the Removable drive in "My computer" to FAT 32 type.
3. Then try restoring the IPod Using IPod Updater.
4. Try the same steps in all the USB ports if it fails and then try in a different computer..
5. If possible use another shuffle and try the sane steps..
6. If another shuffle works fine, then send this iPod (with error) for service..
For sending it to service please visit the link "depot.info.apple.com/"
Also Refer the link "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302204"

Please revert back on clarifications...
Good luck.

Hi, Thank you for your advaices but they didn't help.
I cannot format it as a disk drive. The format doesn't start. I tried on 3 Windows XP Sp2-based PC and one Win2003 Server in my lab but I can only see the Removable Disk Properties: File system: unknown, used space: 0, free space: 0. I updated the chipset drivers on all PCs before the tests.
Does it mean it is dead? Apple Warranty is 1 year, right? Unfortunately, I bought it more that 1 year ago.

Is there any other hack? Unofficial? I am pretty sure that there is a bug in Apple's firmware, because something went wrong when I wanted to change iTunes database.

More info:
When I try to restore the firmware, it takes a logn time to recognize the iPod but finaly I have:
Name: N/A (should be myiPod)
Serial Number: xxxxx (recognized)
Software Version: 1.1.3 (up to date)
Capacity: N/A (should 512MB)

It doesn't recognize its name and its capacity. Does it mean something? The restore tries 3-4 times before stops with "Firmware update failure" message.

If I try on a Mac can it help?

I'm in the same boat as you are. When I tried to restore the firmware, the progress bar froze about 1/3 of the way and then all applications just suddenly stopped working. Had no choice but to pull the plug to shut down the system. Now, when I go to iPod Software Update to restore... the progress bar just goes, and goes, and goes, and goes... and doesn't even amount to nothing. I went to Windows Explorer in attempt to format the iPS, but it comes up 0kb and won't format at all. Cannot restore, cannot reformat. So where do we go from here? Trash can?

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

That sir, isn't availabe since the iPS is no longer seen among the list of disk, volume, or image selection. At least for me, the Mac OS X cannot see the iPS except through the iPod Software Updater. And if I hit the Restore button all it does is show a progress bar forever doing actually nothing. As for attempting to reformat on the PC, I can see the F: drive or whatever drive that my iPS shows up on and right click it in an attempt to re-format it... the only option comes up with 0kb for size and then even leaving at default settings does nothing.
