Why do iCal invites to my Gmail address end up in iCal and not in Gmail?

My wife uses iCal and I use Gmail/Google calendars. When she invites me through her iCal invites she uses my Gmail email address. However... her invites end up in my iCal list of invites to accept and are not forwarded to my Gmail address so I can accept them there. What in the world is going on? I've tried to troubleshoot but I cannot figure it out, and I consider myself reasonably adept at such things.
