Q: Why not wipe Mac and reinstall Operating System?

I have a mid-2011 iMac that is sufferring from intermittant Kernel Panic crashes.  The techs at AppleCare suggested that one possible remedy, one that they intimated should fix my problems, is to wipe the machine clean and reinstall the operating system.   I have all my stuff backed up on an external hard drive (Seagate).  However, they seem reluctant to want to do that and have suggested all kinds of other things that I don't want to do for various reasons.  For example, they want me to remove added ram...even though a hardware test shows no problems.  (The crashes are intermittant, so I can't be sure a lack of crashes with factory ram will prove anything). They also want me to remove all Google apps...including Google Chrome.   I certainly don't want to do that.    Seems to me that if they are so sure that wiping the machine would do the trick, that's what should be done.  The tech I talked to complained that that entails a lot of work, quite a process for them to help me over the phone.   Seems like that's what should be done though if it's going to resolve the problem.  Anybody have any thoughts?

macjack:  Just making it clear regarding Login items and Chrome that the crash is not happening when I start the computer.  Several questions: Should I still remove Google Chrome as login item?  How many loops shoiuld I select?  Not sure what you mean by "what happens" if I do that.  Did you see something in my log that makes you suggest that?

    Rember Test Results

    All tests passed!

    Total built-in memory: 12 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has installed.  If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

    Available memory: 5807 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes.  All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

    Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 5807 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing.  See "Available memory" section for more information.

    -------

    Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.

    Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest.  Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran.  If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.

    -------

Total execution time: All tests passed!  Execution time: 1982  seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

    Testing start time: 2013-08-19 22:12:49 +0000

    Testing end time: 2013-08-19 22:45:54 +0000

Rember version: 0.3.7b Memtest version: 4.22

I do see a problem in your RAM configuration. According to the log, you have the sets mismatched with a 2GB and a 4GB stick paired on each bank. Can't do that.

Shut down, take out all of the RAM and make to put them back in paired to the same size. The two 2GB sticks in bank zero, and the two 4GB sticks in bank one.

Wow, Kurt!  Can't thank you enough.   Just to be clear.  I believe I put the new 4GB sticks on the bottom.  In other words, there are the two original sticks side-by-side on the top....with the new 4GB sticks on the bottom side-by-side.   Which ones go top left, top right, bottom left, & bottom right?

If you have four slots - two rows of two slots each - and the original RAM was in the two slots in the top row (or bottom, for that matter),  then the additional RAM should simply go in the two empty slots next to one another (and be matched horizontally).

Yours is a 2011 iMac, so that should be the configuration; the new iMacs (late 2012) have a different configuration and the slots are only one per row/four rows. On those, the RAM needs to be matched like this: same RAM on row 1 and 3, additional matched RAM on row 2 and 4.

Wow again... just now confirmed that I had the sticks in the correct way.  Don't understand how the log says otherwise.  The two 2GB factory sticks are on top...horizontal from each other as they origianlly came.  The new 4GB sticks are on the bottom...horizonal from each other.

I've given up on the log; as long as they're horizontally lined up on pre 2012 iMacs and matched as mentioned in the new ones, it should be good (unless Apple changed something along the way without telling anyone, LOL). You can check another place: click on 'about this Mac and then on 'more info' - in the resulting window, click on Memory at the top. I'm not near my iMac right now, so I can't post a screenshot, but you should see the RAM matched horizontally. It's also a good place to check on the status of your RAM health.

Looking at that, it looks wrong, but may be correct. Well, it is correct based on the installation manual.

You still have the logmein kext installed.

And...LogMeIn is still installed. Nothing much more we can do until you uninstall all the third-party software.

If that doesn't fix anything, remove the newly installed RAM and test.

Run the uninstaller that came with it, then restart. Your KP's all indicate there is a sound driver still present.

If that doesn't remove it, contact LogMeIn.

Yes, I have uninstalled since posting that log.   I'm asking how to check that it is, indeed, gone.  Also if you could share what item on the log above indicates the presence of the item.   I do not see it.   Again, very appreciative of the assistance!
