Preview's crop tool: how to recover the uncropped version even after saving

Hi,

After previously cropping an image, I decided I wanted to recover the file before it was cropped. Turns out you can recover the uncropped version even after saving the cropped version. It uses time machine:

1) open your image file that you previously cropped and saved

2) click on 'File' --> 'Revert to' --> 'Browse all version...'

3) this will load time machine, and from there you should be able to see your original uncropped image and 'restore' it.

Technically, that's Versions.

The earlier versions of the file (actually, just the changed parts) are stored in a hidden system folder on your Mac. That's where the Versions browser looks first.

Depending on what it finds there, it will also look in Time Machine backups if necessary, if you use Time Machine and the backup disk is available.
