Q: Apple TV will not stream audio to Airport Express during Airplay

As per this link (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5517) I should be able to go into Apple TV Settings > Airplay > Speakers and choose one of my two Airport Expresses with speakers hooked up to play the audio during Airplay.  For some reason I can't seem to get this to work.  I am doing exactly what it says I should and yet the audio refuses to play out of my Airport speakers during Airplay.  It just plays out of the TV instead.  Any ideas?

    think it's by design

because when I in itunes can choose my appletv as speaker and my airport express at the same time then

what woud happen if the appletv would pass on the audio again to the express

so I believe they made it so a device being airplay'd to can't at the same time airplay to other devices

I cant guarantee this, but this is what I've found:

It should work for iPad (does for me). I think its because ipad has two streams, probably because of the raop encryption. Macbooks and airparrot etc embed the audio in the video stream. So I think the speaker option is only for a seperate raop stream. I dont know how to force a MacBook to emulate an ipad in how it does airplay.

Again I cant guarantee this is 100% correct but after watching the sessions from wireshark and the firewall, the two devices definately have protocol differences.
