Macbook Pro can only start up in safe mode

Hi,

My Macbook Pro has recently been freezing on a blue screen when I try and start up. I seem to only be able to start up in safe mode.

I have followed some instructions found regarding the blue screen issue: deleting some files out of library/startupitems folder

and managed to start up normally once, then soon after I got a message saying I need to restart my computer by holding down the power button.

I am now back to having to log in using safe mode.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Any other ideas?

Not really - if you've moved those items and they don't load at startup, your problem likely lies with some other kexts that are loading in your user account. The only thing that I can suggest is a clean installation of OS X and all of your apps, data, etc. (assuming that you have backups?) by wiping your drive and resinatlling.

Thanks,

I have read those. The safe mode article doesn't specifically say whether external hard drives will work. It mentions external modems won't work and mounting time capsule disks will be disabled. Not sure if those refer to an external usb hard drive.

Because I have not backed up my files in a while, I would like to back them up before I have to resort to reinstalling OS X.

If anyone knows a way to do this it would be greatly appreciated!

if you have another mac computer you can try target disk mode to try and recover the data on the mac, the following article tells how to do this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725

also some apple service providers offer data recovery services for a fee as well. the following site gives listing of these near you:

good luck
