My old iPod touch says "Connect to iTunes" when plugged into the wall, but is completely dead when plugged into my computer...

I forgot my iPod Touch somewhere 18 months ago and it has just been returned to me. It was charged sometimes in the interim, but I don't know how often. I locked it remotely and that is still the status that shows up in iCloud. iCloud can't find it because it is offline.

Now, when I plug it into the wall (via USB charger) the Apple logo appears and then, soon after, I get the graphic that shows that it needs to be plugged into iTunes via USB.

When I plug it into my computer via USB, however, the screen is completely black and it doesn't show up in iTunes.

Is there a way to revive this? It seems like, if it gets power from the wall, it should be able to run with power from the computer, right? I would like to use it to play music at home and so I could leave it plugged in all the time...the battery isn't an issue for me.

I've tried holding the on/off button simultaneously with the "home" button for 10 seconds...when it's plugged into the wall, that just takes me back to the Apple logo, and when it's plugged into the computer, it stays black. It does turn off when it's plugged into the wall, when I hold the on/off button and slide the slider.

Thank you!!!

Error 1604

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.

If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
  2. Restore and wait for the error.
  3. When prompted, click OK.
  4. Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
  5. The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
  6. Try to restore again.

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Error 1600, 1601, 1602

Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.

You asked

.I have already seen and tried all of these things. Does a USB cable that has been used by my iPhone successfully to connect, in that same USB port, on the same computer count as a "known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection"?

Yes for cable and computer but not for internet connection unless you can also restore the iPhone at this time.

I locked the device remotely when I realized that I had left it behind. Is it possible that this is the problem? Is there a way to unlock it in this state? As I said, iTunes does recognize it when I put it in DFU mode.

This is an old device, so it's not going to be worth paying for service...I am just hoping to use it some more.

Wow, I just found the link:

http://geekindisguise.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/how-to-put-ipod-touch-iphone-into -dfu-mode/

and followed these instructions...and suddenly it showed up in iTunes saying it was in "recovery mode."

iTunes is now restoring the software and I hope this solved my problem! Thank you, Karthik!!!

(If I don't post further here, you can assume this problem is solved, and I hope this helps someone else, too :-))

Alas, I wrote prematurely. Now I get error message 1601 that says the iPod Touch can't be restored.

Three times, I have put the thing into DFU mode, and iTunes has recognized it, started to restore, and then stopped with the error.

I have turned off all virus protection software and tried a few different USB cables. The Apple site says that I should quit and restart iTunes, and that the iPod Touch should then show up in recovery mode again when it's restarted, but it doesn't. The only way to get it to show up again is to put it into DFU mode following the instructions above. Once the error message comes up and I click "okay" then the device disappears.

Any ideas, anyone? Many thanks in advance!!!
