Two things, first that is obviously the Apple ID that you used to set up the Mac when you first got it, so the Mac itself, OS X and the free iLife apps are permanently associated with that Apple ID. There is no way to change that.

Second, when you first set up the Mac you needed to open the Mac App Store, sign in with your Apple ID, go to the Purchases pane and acccept these apps into your account. If you failed to do that, but you used any one of the three, they became one-trick-ponies that cannot be installed on any of your other Macs or be updated. They are permanently as is.

Actually, if your iLife Apps were accepted by someone else that owned the Mac before you,  then Contact iTunes store support ... they can reset it so you can accept the apps.

He didn't say anything about it belonging to anyone else. He has said that he signed into the account, which leads me to believe that account was his.
