Lacie Blade Runner disconnects whenever I start to copy files to it!

Lacie Blade Runner disconnects whenever I start to copy files to it! Any ideas as to why? I have reformatted it on my Mac as well as on a PC. Still experiencing random disconnects!?!? It seems to be more prevalent when the files are larger in size >1GB or when I select a large number of files to copy to the hard drive! I am very frustrated!!

Check with LaCie for firmware updates. Also don't try to connect too many external devices at once.

External drives frequently communicate asynchronously, which means if you are trying to transfer data between two external drives one may be playing catchup with the other causing problems. Better to use your internal drive as an intermediate copy location if that's what is happening. Make sure both Time Machine and Spotlight aren't trying to look at the external drive while making those copies.

Thank you....but still have issues!

I have confirmed firmware is up-to-date and that the drive is NOT included in both Time Machine and Spotlight.

However still getting...

"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off."

I have another USB3.0 hard drive installed at the same time NO issues and it is NTFS formated.

Any suggestions???

Hi,

I don't have the Blade Runner, but do have some of their other products. I have found that the cables they supply are often faulty. I've had this issue on a thunderbolt drive and once I swapped out cables it went away. I've also had to replace a USB cable that came with one of their older drives as it would never stay connected. Might be worth trying a quick swap out if you have extra cables around.

Good Luck

Hi Bryan,

I have tried out your suggestions, and the problem still there.

However, I have done a few more test tonight with the following devices..... and have the following conclusions.

I bought this new 2nd generation Stark Blade Runner HDD for my new late-2013 iMac. Also, I have a 2009 iMac, a 2010 Macbook Air, a 1st generation Stark HDD (USB2.0), a Western Digital Studio HDD (USB3.0) in the household.

I tried the Blade Runner with the 2009 iMac and 2010 Macbook Air. Both worked fine under USB 2.0. It only has this problem with my new 2013 iMac running USB3.0.

Then I tried my 1st gen Stark HDD with the 3 Macs. All worked fine.

Then I tried my Western Digital Studio HDD (USB3.0) on all 3 Macs. All worked fine as well. it even runs fine with the new iMac on USB3.0.

So, the tests conclude that the Blade Runner only has problem with the new late 2013 iMac running USB 3.0. So, I guess this 2nd generation Stark is not compatible with the new iMac's USB 3.0 port?

I am stuck with a USB3.0 HDD that can only be used with my older Mac running USB2.0 😟

Hi Dannyluk,

I would open a support ticket at Lacie and have their people look at possibly supplying a firmware update. Send them all the info you have and link this msg board in your email so they are aware others are also having issues. You may also be able to get an RMA to return the product as defective and get a refund and then try a different vendor. I currently have a lacie thunderbolt model and it appears to be working after a few cable swaps. I can copy directly from my backup program "Superduper" without issues, which is all I really want it to do.

Good Luck,

Bryan

I've given up on this! I have the Lacie Blade Runner connected to my HP Windows 8.1 desktop (via USB 3) and it's been running flawlessly. But whenever I attach it to my iMac (via USB 3) it doesnt work properly. My iMac sees the device but loses connection during any file transfer. I had it formatted for NTFS and HFS no go with the iMac!

I also believe there is an issue with the USB 3.0 ports on the iMac - very strange!
