Q: There was a problem connecting to the server "Neptune"; The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator...

I've seen this problem throughout the website, but nothing hits all my bases.

I'm running OS 10.8.4- just upgraded last month.

I work for a company that predominantly uses PC's. I'm in the Graphics Department.

Neptune is a Windows server but houses all our art files. Since the upgrade I have not been able to access the server either by name (which used to work) or by IP address.

I tried doing the suggested "terminal" fix but that did not work.

I must say, mail works. Internet works. Wi-fi works.

Any other suggestion?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Okay, I solved my own problem. It was basically not knowing wht afp and smb stands for.

All I did was switch afp for smb before the IP address and BOOM I was in.

I do want to thank everyone who talked about how well "smb" worked over "afp" or I never would have thought to try it.

    Hi AppleRocks

Glad you've found a workaround however this is a common problem for people trying to connect via AFP as a registered user to a legacy server.

Whilst connecting via SMB and as a 'guest' should provide a temporary solution some people need to connect via AFP as a registered user to access all of their servers files successfully.

There are several sudo commands and discussions on this subject (Believe me I've read most of them ) but I have found this thread to be the simplest and most effective:

Connecting to legacy AFP services - Apple Support

Hope this helps future readers of this thread!
