Unable to cut and paste

I am new in using Mac and im still learnign navigating OSX (been a windows user all my life). I dont understand why cut and paste is not working all the times. I'm trying to organise my files and its difficult (waste of time) dragging and then deleting copied file while cut and paste should be able to do the job. Please help.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Cut & Paste was added to Mountain Lion, but not in those specific terms. In order to do a similar procedure, you highlight your items and press Command+C to copy them. Nothing happens yet. Now highlight your target folder or drive and press Command+Option+V. The items will be moved.

Edit: Was typing before Matt's comment was up. Holding the Command key while dragging is how a move has normally been done on the Mac. The keyboard method is new to ML.

You can't cut and paste in the Finder. You can copy and paste, or you can drag from one location to another.

If you drag between two locations on the same hard drive, by default the files will get moved. If you want to copy them instead, hold down the Option key as you drag.

If you drag between two locations on different drives, by default they'll get copied, and you'll see the plus symbol attach to the cursor. If you want to move them, hold down the command key as you drag.
