How can I transfer things from my old laptop onto my new macbook pro?

I didnt have a mac laptop before this one. I had an hp laptop
I would say just buy an external hard drive if you have a lot of files that you need to transfer. If its only like 10gb then use a usb.
I have been using an external hard drive to move a lot of files, but there are some videos and pictures that will not show up after I transer it to my mac. It says that the required "codec" isnt available?
I think it depends on the extension of the file. If it's jpeg or .mov it will definitely work on a mac. Try this link maybe... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3192424?start=0&tstart=0 I'm not too sure
