I've installed (and updated): Office for Mac 2011; Parallels Desktop 8; Windows 7 Home Premium 64; Paragon; Office 2007 (for Windows); Avast Anti virus; Wallpapers HD.

Aug 21, 2013 1:19 PM in response to Gustavobarra

I also have the following hardware: Time Capsule 2TB (as a router and working with Time Machine); HP Laser Printer model P1102W; Super Drive (from Apple); a HUB USB 8 ports (C3 Tech); an ethernet cable running from my Time Capsule to the iMac. I also have recently purchased the new MacBook Air with exactly the same softwares installed on it (Parallels, Windows 7 Home Premium, Paragon and Avast). Until now it showed no frozen or kernell problems.

Thanks for all of you guys who can give some help.

Although it's probably not contributing to this problem, you should remove the worthless "Avast" product according to the developer's instructions. As long as it's installed, your system is unmaintainable.

The Time Machine backup data on the network device is corrupt. The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.

After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.

If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced.

Avast may be the reason your file system became corrupted. For that reason, I suggest you do not rely upon any Time Machine backups created prior to uninstalling it.

I would not rely upon anything to remain intact subsequent to using Avast or any similar ill-conceived product that modifies the Mac's file system. In an abundance of caution you should consider erasing your existing system and rebuilding it.

Thank you very much for your help. Yes, I've just uninstalled Avast e the problem seems to be solved. Well, must wait for some more days to see. Don't you recommend any antivirus to protect my iMac ?

Macs don't need any antivirus at all ? I also made a full delete of the hard disk inside my Time Capsule (brand new, too). Updated my Parallels Desktop 8, Windows 7 Home Premium 64, Paragon, Office for Mac 2011, as I remeber.

Everything you need is already included in OS X. You already paid for it. Just keep it up to date.

Third party "anti-virus" solutions convey no additional benefit. Most will only cause problems of varying degrees, costing you varying amounts of time and money to correct whether they are "free" or not. Avast is one of the worst examples.

Aug 24, 2013 9:03 AM in response to John Galt

Please, after doing a full delete of the internal hard disk of the Time Capsule, do you also recommend me to insist on it to make a new backup, or it is more reliable to buy one external USB (or even Thunderbolt) drive for the future backups ? If so, which brand do you recommend ?

The last 3 days my new iMac is running rock solid, with no kernell panics.

Thanks a lot for your help !!!!!!!

Aug 24, 2013 9:30 AM in response to Gustavobarra

Backups created prior to uninstalling Avast should not be relied upon, so I suggest you create an entirely new backup.

Time Capsule is fine. It is no more or less reliable than anything else.

Augmenting your backup strategy with the use of additional devices as you suggest is always a good idea though. Using additional methods such as a "clone" is also a good idea. Such redundancy ensures the risk of permanent data loss is reduced to an acceptable degree.

New iMac restarts several times a day.Have already checked hardware and ram. Thei're OK. Any ideas ? OSX-10.8.4.
