cannot click links in Safari

Often, Safari can't directly click on a link in a web page. If I cmd+click or click on a link, nothing happens. Oddly, if I ctrl+click on the link, I can open it in a new tab or window. So Safari is properly parsing and seeing the element -- but I, for some aggrevating reason, can't actually _click_ it.

I've seen similar questions solved by clearing the cache. That solution isn't working for me (and even if it did, it would be a workaround to the core problem at best).

Between my favorite coffee shop, work and home I am accessing the internet from at least three different providers, so my internet service can't be a factor (and given the fact Safari actually sees the same HTML code and knows these are links, that can't be the problem).

This started happening on my old 10.6 based laptop but still persists on my brand new 10.8 based MacBook Pro. I did not migrate my settings or applications from my old 10.6 based laptop. This is a factory fresh install.

I can't be the only one affected by this. I am running a stock Safari configuration with no plug-ins.

another spin on this problem - if a site pushes a download link, usually the download won't start (e.g. downloading Spotify or Chrome). If I click the "try again" link which simply reloads the page, the page will reload but the downlaod won't start. Now, if I ctrl+click on the "try again" link and open in a new tab or window, THEN it work and the download will start.

As I did on my 10.6 system, using Chrome for now where I am not having this issue.

From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari Preferences Extensions

Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Behavior is the same in safe mode and guest user.

But.. I think I figured it out. Watching the network activity while this happens, there are stalled requests still waiting for a server response. These were ad frames on the web sites having trouble. If I waited a few minutes for these to time out, suddenly I could start clicking on the problem links.

So, it appears Safari sometimes won't allow the page to start "working" until the entire page loads.

The problem links aren't javascript buttons or anything like that; they are simplly links. To repeat, I can ctrl+click and open these links in a new window or tab. I just can't simply click or cmd+click on them.

Highly annoying usability problem IMO.
