Hey marydepaul,

Great question. The core answer to this question is that you'll want to setup contact syncing with your Mac. The preferred method is to sync your contacts via iCloud, however this would require an OS X update, as I see you are running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Alternatively, you can setup syncing with iTunes:

iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad

Please back up your device before setting up syncing to avoid any accidental data loss.

Choosing an iOS backup method (Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iOS device?)

Thanks,
