1st Generation Ipod Wheel Problem

I read the old posts in regards to this issue but the last post was in 2008 and seemed to be left unresolved.

I managed to return it back to factory.

It seems to download songs but can NOT get it off of the language screen ...... the wheel is NOT working.

I realize this an old Ipod .... it spent quite a bit of time in a drawer. Took it back out to see if it worked, to see if I wanted to keep it OR pass it on.

Has anyone had any luck fixing this issue with the wheel without taking it apart?
