I am trying to format a new ext. harddrive in Disk Utilities. In the SMART status it says 'not supported'. Does this mean that I cannot format this hard drive?

No. It only means that the computer won't be told if the drive realizes that it's going to fail soon.

So I can go ahead and try and format this thing. And then just update my system when I can afford it. And that should all be fine?
