I have an old Macbook - Mac os X 10.5.8  I am trying to format a hard drive in DU.  The SMART status says 'not supported'.  Does this mean that I cannot format and use my new hard drive?

Hello please help

I am trying to format a new ext. harddrive in Disk Utilities.  In the SMART status it says 'not supported'.  Does this mean that I cannot format this hard drive?
