Hi, I have been using emojis succesfully for years. Recently, all of a sudden, typing an emoji will crash any application that I use (texts, notes, even the app search). Any ideas? thanks. I have tried to close the app (wiggly minus), do a hard restart (home and off button), delete emoji keyboard and select again, with no success.

Just did a phone restore from iTunes, choosing 'new phone' - the problem disappeared. I then did a restore from backup, and the problem returns. So it must be something wrong with my backup version?

Yes, your backup has the corrrupted data. So restore from that backup brought back the problem.
Try deleting the Emoji App, then reinstalling it.
And how did you still have Emoji on the keyboard if you restored it as 'new'?
I used the emoji keyboard which comes as default on the iPhone, not a downloaded app. I'm currently trying to work out how to get an older version backup than just the latest (which has the problem).
I don't believe there's a way to restore from an older backup, at least one that is Apple supported. There may be a third-party procedure, but I dont' see anything in the Apple support docs or on this forum.
You might have to manually re-download your apps & purchases...
dont ask me why this worked all of the sudden. but all my apps started crashing within 24 hours installing 7 on my 4s. narrowed it down speciffically to the emoji function. tried several wipes and re-installs, but like stated above, its just re-installing the previous problem.....tonight i went into the keyboards section, deleted the emoji keyboard; then i selected bold text....which requires a phone reboot. for some reason, i have no app crashes, turned emoji back on and eberything "seems" to work so far??? weird I know but all my previous problems are gone?
I have the same exact problem, but the solution for mzdfc3s350z ^^^ didn't work for me
I found a fix, worked for me. Go to reset and reset your dictionary to factory default setting. I did and the problem went away.

I have had the same problem with my new iphone 5s...

Go to settings > General > reset > CLICK "Reset Keyboard Dictionary"

Yes, there was a problem within your backup and "Restoring from Backup" will continue to bring it back--but there are little-to-no reasons why you can't "Restore from Backup" if troubleshooting and repairing are done correctly.
I find most people will quickly jump to "Setup as New," and that should be nearly the last option.
