Q: When using airplay from mac to apple tv it lags/freezes, but works fine with iPhone

Ive recently bought a apple tv 3rd generation. Everything seems to be working fine with airplay from my iphone to apple tv, but when I try and use airplay from my mac book pro, it is extremely slow, and if I try and stream a movie or something its that terrible it is unwatchable and usually freezes then stops. How can I resolve this problem? is this a problem with the apple tv?

    Same here, too.

    MBP 13" Retina 2.6/i5, 8 GB, OS X 10.9

    ATV 3. Gen., 6.0.2

    iTunes 11.1.3

Full speed mirroring with iPhone 4S via personal hotspot, low speed mirroring with MBP via W-LAN (Netgear WGR614v7 without any issues).

No Parallels in progress. Just Mavericks and iTunes.

    Feedback submitted to AppleCare.

2012 15" Retina Macbook Pro hooked up via thunderbolt ethernet to ethernet on the aTV 2 and the stutters are there. Even dropping the Macbook resolution to 1024x768 and aTV 720P the stutters are there. Yet I pull out my iPhone 5S/5/4S or iPad 2 with the same content and no stutters. It makes no sense. It is clearly an issue with OSX.

Mac OS X 10.9.1 has fixed the problem for me.

    Pixelation is gone.

The delay between mouse/keyboard input and display is noticible but manageable.

Streaming video works well (with audio / video just a tiny bit out of sync).

I'm so sorry I forgot to say that I also changed the resolution. I went to display preferences after I extended my desktop to Apple TV. Then I looked on my tv screen and changed the resolution from 720p to the one below it. Watching now and there is no lag.

I switched to wired ethernet on the AppleTV and it is much better (not perfect, though). The wireless in the AppleTV is slow. Even 1 foot away from my AccessPoint it connected at 56mbps. I have a feeling that the video sent through the iDevices is not true 720P so they stream fine.

I have the same exact issue, but not only for video playback, even if I just try to "airplay" music from my brand new MBP retina 13" (by selecting Apple TV as output source for sound) the lag is so bad it is practically not usable.

Any ideas what may be causing this? Airplay works perfectly fine when streaming from my iPad 2 or iPhone 4S, but I get terrible lags for anything I try to airplay/stream from the MBP retina. I am running the latest OS X (10.9.1) and an Apple TV 2 also with the latest software update.

Edit: Seems it works fine when I'm playing from Youtube or iTunes, but not with Spotify, so I guess the Spotify software is the issue here for me... (although video playback is also lagging somewhat, but works flowlessly if I connect with an HDMI cable)

Same here, Mac pro latest OS... The thing is that there is no lag when playing movies with Apple tv that are located in my mac, when using the Apple tv interface.

This is seriously driving me crazy, I tried changing the resolution on TV and on my Mac, my software is up to date, bluetooth is off, tried everything but Apple TV is lagging when connected to computer but works perfect on ipad and iphone,

Just now I spent 35 minutes on iPad to find the movie where as takes a minute on Mac. Apple TV just not working on my brand new MAC air, I tried in 3 diffrent houses and basically Apple TV is not working as it should be with Airplay / Mirroring. This is not a wifi strenght issue or any other outside source it is just not working with Mac as it should.

I am sooooooo ****** of and its just wasting my time at this point, impossible to watch anything from the computer, even the movies from my computer is lagging including the mouse movements whereas works perfect with other devices.

Using my computer on TV was the reason I purchased it and its absolute garbage.

I know, it's the same thing with my MBPr, airplay simply lags too much to be usable for video streaming. Works perfectly with iPhone/iPad. This ***** as it was one of the reasons I upgraded from my MBP 2010. At least the MBPr has a HDMI video+audio output, so now I'm simply connecting it with a cable to my TV which works great, but would be better if airplay worked as advertised...

I had the same problem with MacPro Retina - try this:

    Launchpad

    System Preferences

    Displays

In "Display" tab, choose "optimize for Apple TV (Airplay)"
