Sound on Apple TV not working.

I just turned on my Apple TV and I have no sound. It was working fine last time I used it. Checked audio settings and hdmi lead.

If you are still having problems and you have a receiver or HDMI switch between your AppleTV and your receiver then you may need a solution to correct the EDID in the HDMI signal between all the devices. See if this article matches what you're seeing. If so you can follow some of the recommendations based on your setup. http://www.pooraudiophile.com/2013/12/the-fix-for-appletv-hdmi-woes-and-hdmi.htm l. If your setup is simple then go for the Dr. HDMI. however make sure you have followed all the troubleshooting steps in the Apple tech notes.

I have two Apple TV's in different rooms. I had a similar problem in one of the rooms and went into the settings then airplay and discovered that I had the speakers connected to the other Apple TV in another room. Once I selected the correct speakers it worked fine. You may not have the same set up, but if you do this may be the problem if you have tried everything else like I had.

I'd love to be able to offer some help, and I can understand your frustration when something isn't working, but can you please repost with what your setup is like, what you're trying to do and what the specific problem is?

All I understand is MacBook doesn't have sound with AppleTV. can you please confirm your Mac operating system version, what generation AppleTV you have and if you are going straight to a TV or through a receiver, etc?

I'm also having this issue. Sound works well on music and even on the previews but I rented a movie and no sound. Did all the troubleshooting, rebooting, disconnecting HDMI cables and restarted it. So far nothing has worked but still have all the sound on previews and other apps.

Any ideas? Apple TV is directly connected to the tv and no receiver.

Music, apps, and previews are all stereo (2 channel) sound. Some movies rented through AppleTV are available in Dolby Digital surround, which a TV is unable to play. Go to your settings for audio and turn off Dolby Digital and make sure your audio is in 16-bit format. This should solve the problem. What you are describing sound like a textbook case of that problem.

Agreed.

All the other iOS-devices connected to AppleTV work just fine: Spotify on iPhone & iPad... Movies on iMac... So, there´s nothing wrong with my AppleTV.

But now when I´m using my new 13" Retina-Macbook: NO SOUND. I´ve done everything. Tried connecting all the cables, rebooting the whole system (MacBook & AppleTV). Even tried that Terminal-script someone suggested. Still: NO SOUND.

This is ********. When I googled this "no sound-topic", seems that the problem has been there for quite a long time. WHY ISN´T THERE A PROPER FIX!?!!??!?!?

Using Airplay + AppleTV was one of the main reasons, why I bought this new laptop. I was promised, that especially this will work fluently.

I´m ******.

Many of you are offering poor solutions by just linking articles. Many people, including myself are having an issue where sound effects such as the clicks are able to be heard but once you open an app to watch something the audio is gone. Changing audio settings and checking cables has nothing to do with this.

However, restarting the Apple TV did fix the problem.

There is sound every now and then. Still I need to reboot my Macbook.

So, I managed to get sound using VLC-player and Quicktime. But if streaming the web (Youtube, Vimeo etc. etc.) NO SOUND. Still, Spotify seems to be working OK.

This is ****.

My system:

Brand new 13" Retina-Macbook with OSX 10.9, ATV, Yamaha-receiver (optical connection between ATV & receiver)

Funny thing is, that if close the hatch on my laptop (disconnecting AppleTV-connection), there is still sound coming from the sound-system, but NO PICTURE!

iPad & iPhone with ATV/Airplay work PERFECTLY.

PLEASE FIX THIS.

So Lauri2000, to be clear, you can use AirPlay to:

  1. Stream your computer desktop
  2. Stream audio and video from just about any application on your computer except for Safari (that would include YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)

I want to make sure that you are streaming your entire desktop and not trying to stream the YouTube or Vimeo player. It sounds to me like you are trying to stream only a specific application. If an application hasn't been designed to take advantage of AirPlay, then it can't. For web content like YouTube, Vimeo, etc, you need to stream your entire screen and then put the video into full screen mode (if you want to watch it like a TV program).

That will solve your problem if I understand what you're describing. Again, I think you're trying to stream the app. That won't work. You need to stream the entire computer desktop and that will work.

To be clear, I want to hear my computers sound via my speaker-system, wirelessly. Play games, watch videos, stream youtube etc. etc. I KNOW IT IS POSSIBLE, because... for some reason, now there is sound in the youtube-video that I´m streaming USING SAFARI!! Yesterday the youtube-sound was missing.

So, I guess what I´m trying to do stream the entire desktop. Whatever. I don´t even know how to "stream the app".

Probably tomorrow the sound is missing again. It´s really annoying reboot the laptop and reconnect the ATV-cables to fix the problem. If Apple wants system like this, they should add a reset button to ATV to make rebooting easier.
