I bought an imac in a yard sale but I dont have the user name or log in password to the desktop so I can't access thedesktop at all wat can I do to resest the desktop

Hopefully you have the install disks that would have been supplied with the Mac when new - you'll likely need it/them:

The best thing to do with any used computer is to erase the drive and reinstall the operating system from scratch. If the seller didn't give you the original installation disks, you'll have to identify the model of Mac you have and buy a retail set of Mac OS X installation disks, from a private seller for a system that old if it is indeed from 2004. Apple will no longer have installation disks for any system that old.

Are you sure? AFAIK, replacement discs are always available. Best thing to do is ask at 1-800-MY-APPLE, but it does require knowing the machine's serial number.

Yes, I'm sure, if the Mac is indeed as old as the OP says. Any Mac sold in 2004 would have been placed on the "obsolete" list well before now and hence Apple will no longer stock any replacement items for it nor provide any sort of service.

I'm not convinced, since this is the first time I've seen this posted, and think it's worth a call. People said that about gettng Tiger and Leopard install discs, but they were still available last year (the last time I checked).

Jess can of course call and ask, but I think the chances of Apple still having disk sets for a system that's been on the obsolete list for probably well over a year are very small. That's been the case reported when others with obsolete systems have called Apple looking for the disks, but perhaps Jess will get lucky.
