new computer no home button in finder

In the Finder go to the Go menu, select Go to Folder. In the dialog that comes up put /Users (the slash is important) and click the Go button. You should see a new Finder window with several icons in it including your house. Drag that house icon into the Dock. It has to go on the right side, near the trash with other folders. If you try to put it in among applications it won't work.

Not sure what you mean by a home button. Is there no little "house" icon in your dock?

If not, open a Finder window, navigate to your user folder (house icon) and drag it into the dock.

Or go to the Sidebar pane in the Finder preferences and check the box next to your user name (with the little "house" icon).
