Q: my Mac only restarts when I try to up-date my software, why won't it install?

Every time I up-date my software, it says I have 11 items but when I hit the button for "install 11 items" it says "To install the updates, you must restart you computer. but it never installs the updates.

Repair permissions and restart  your computer.  Afterwards, only install 2 items at a time.  After all the installations are done, again repair permissions and restart your computer.
