Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
I found this article named iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802.
This section from the article should help get that battery charging or isolate what is going on with it.
Battery does not charge from the USB power adapter
Important: Only original iPhone can be charged from a FireWire-based power source. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the battery may drain.
- Verify that the outlet being used is working.
- Try another USB power adapter if available.
- If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
- Try another USB cable if available.
- Also refer to iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery.
All the best,
Sterling

I have an iPhone 5. In the past 6 months it seems like the cell no longer fits the designated jack. I have tried numerous cables and other devices. What I have found is that the cable needs to be fiddled with FOR HOURS to get the cell charge. As for updating ... my cell no longer updates on my own home MacBook Air.
I know the workaround. I would like to know the correct answer.

Oct 11, 2014 1:41 PM in response to crooked6pby crooked6p,In addition, today I have attempted to sync three times. Each time it has attempted to load every app I have ever purchased and then bombed because there was not enough space. Even with music turned off. It is ignoring the selections I make. And seeing more apps on the cell than I have there.
I am now downloading to my laptop every app purchased on my iPhone 5 for the past two years. I have done this 100 times in the past??
Pls help.

Oct 11, 2014 1:48 PM in response to crooked6pby crooked6p,I am now downloading to my laptop every app purchased on my iPhone 5 for the past two years. I have done this 100 times in the past?? Sorry. I thought it was every app purchased on the iPhone 5. To be certain I attempted to verify completion by downloading from the cell again and found more apps purchased from the iPhone 4.
