Java 1.4.1 for OSX 1

Hello,
I have an old tangerine ibook with an OS 10.2, and I am finally trying to update to Java 1.4.1.
I found a version that is supposed to work for OS 10.1 and up, and downloaded it but it won't install. It gets my password and then the "application unexpectedly quits."
Does any one know why this is happening?
Thanks,
Wendy

If you downloaded something other than the version available on this page, download the file linked to and try again. Otherwise, open the Software Update pane of System Preferences, check for updates, and download the Java updater if you find it. Downloading other updates first may be necessary before Software Update will show you the Java update.

Thank you,
Okay. Now I am trying to update the OS to 10.2.8, but it requires 813 MB. Yikes! I already have OS 9.1 and 10.2 on the ancient machine. I don't know how to clear up that much space. Can I, or should I, get rid of the original operating system? If so, how? I recently deleted a ton of stuff just to help things run better.
Wendy.

If you have less than 813MB available on your hard disk, you will likely experience problems soon if you're not already. Download and use Monolingual and use it to remove unnecessary foreign language files. Purchase an external hard disk if you don't already have one and move your documents to that disk; it is also possible to move your whole home folder to it. If the nightly maintenance tasks haven't been run for a long time, use these instructions to run them. Delete drivers and PPDs for printers you don't have from the /Library/Printers/ folder. If there's anything in the /Library/Packages/ folder that you don't need, they can be deleted as well.

I appreciate your help, since I am not computer savvy at all.

Are you saying it would be safe for me to delete the classic software? I never use it in OS9 mode, and would rather not spend the money on an external hard disk since it looks like I will be needing a new computer soon enough.

PS. Where do I look to find out how much available memory I have?

1. If you don't use Classic, open your hard disk in the Finder, select the items named "System Folder" and "Applications (Mac OS 9)", drag them to the Trash, and empty it.

2. The amount of free space on the hard disk may be revealed when you double-click it; if not, select it and choose Get Info from the File menu. The free space will be listed to the right of Available under General.
