I recently bought a new iPad and set it up. I downloaded the Google Drive app to download PDF files of my textbooks for college. But when I tried to open one of the PDF's from Google Drive, it opened for a few seconds and then the app just closed.
Is it maybe because the pdf file is too big or should I use another app to open the pdf file? How can I fix this so I can view the PDF?

I use Dropbox http://www.dropbox.com and store all my documents there. The Dropbox app for iPad is great. You can view the PDF right in the Dropbox app.
Another favorite app that I use with PDFs is Notability. I can use Notablity to read and annotate my PDFs.

Use iTunes to put your PDFs on the iPad, not Google Drive.
Put the PDFs into iTunes on your computer, then synchronise your computer with the iPad and they'll appear there.
To retry using Google Drive, there are three steps you can try, from quickest to slowest. After each step, launch the app and try again.
First, try exiting the Google Drive app, double tapping the Home button holding your finger over any app icon in the bar that pops up from the bottom of the screen, and tapping the red and white minus button on the Google Drive icon. Second, while in Google Drive, you can hold down the button on top of the ipad until 'slide to power off appears, then let go and hold down the home button for about 10 seconds until the app quits.
Third, perform step 1 and then hold the top button and Home buttons together to reset the iPad.
If none of this works you can also try quitting background apps by double tapping the Home button and tapping the red and white circle for each. It's boring but you can get into a rhythm.
Are you using an iPad 1? I have one and I get a lot of similar problems, which I guess is due to the lower amount of RAM and less poweful processor. The original iPad is rather dated already, unfortunately. It's also possible that there is an issue with the Google Drive app, so you may want to contact Google for support.
There are plenty of alternative ways to view PDFs, one of which is to import them into iTunes and sync them to iBooks. Or you could do a web search to find other ways.
