When I Air play mirror my MacBook pro, using Apple TV, while playing a DVD through DVD player, the screen turns to a gray checkerboard pattern. Why can't I stream through DVD player?

That is normal, the DVD player is blocked from mirroring. Users have reported success with VLC.
