Welcome to Apple Support Communities

This book will appear automatically in your child's iPad if both of you are using the same Apple ID and if Automatic Downloads are enabled on his/her iPad for books > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4539

So as long as my child has a separate Apple ID, even if the ipad also backs up to iCloud, these items won't sync?
