Optical drive wont work

I am running a mid 2011 iMac 21.5" the drive model in question is

WDC WD5000AAKS-402AA0

I recently did a full format of my system including removing Bootcamp, reinstalled 10.8 and everything worked fine, i installed 3 x retail game discs not an issue, i also began the process of putting all my CDs back into my itunes library, when i got to my home created discs burned from this very system and confirmed working on other household PCs and stereos it began to fail to read then eject the discs, after a little searching i found someone mention resetting the PRAM would solve my issue, i followed the steps and PRAM reset, inserted the disc and it now tells me the discs are blank.

To summarise

Retail discs read fine

Home created Media doesnt

Methods used to attempt to resolve issue

Reset PRAM

Cleaned with CD cleaner

If anyone can help that would be great, i own a legitimate windows license key, just not a disc that i didnt create myself so i cannot reinstall bootcamp as 10.8.4 wont allow my machine to boot from USB

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
