Time Machine server turns off, reports 'unknown errors'

Running time machine on osx 10.8.4, continuously turns off with 'Multiple errors occurred on the server while processing commands. Use the Console application to view the error messages.'

Console errors report 'Error: The server '127.0.0.1' reported an error while processing a command of type: 'readSettings' in plug-in: 'servermgr_timemachine'. Error: Error Domain=XSActionErrorDomain Code=1000 "An unknown error occurred" UserInfo=0x7fc504c03010 {NSLocalizedDescription=An unknown error occurred}'

In the 'off' state Time Machine says it can't read Time Machine settings, but then eventually turns back on and backups continue. Backups are certainly working, but the server keeps choking, and every choke takes longer than the last to start back up.

I've tried restarting Time Machine but not the server itself, as it does a host of other things that cannot go down.

Thanks for any input!!
