Q: New iMac not able to scan from Brother print.

My new iMac (OS 10.8.4) won't allow me to scan from my Brother DCP-J140W printer. After many rounds with Brother tech support, I tried installing the same app to my old (2007) iMac, which is also OS 10.8.4, and it worked perfectly. So this is an issue with the computer, not the scanner. Help?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I still wouldn't say this is an issue with your new computer. Is your scanner recognized by your iMac? Have you tried to scan using the preview application? Try it without the Brother software to see what happens.

thanks, Jordan. The device is regonized by the iMac-- I can print with no problem.

I wanted to try using the Image Capture to get around this, but there's no driver for the Brother. Only Canon and Epson. Any idea how/where I could get that?

What's the model number? Is it available for download on Brothers website? If not there may be a generic driver that could possibly work.

It's a DCP-J140W. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with two levels of Brother tech support, and we tried uninstalling and reinstalling, ImageCapture, etc. They finally said to try it on the old Mac and  if it worked  that if it did, it was a computer issue and not something they could help with--so I don't think it's something they can provide--although I did reach out to them to see if they had any other recommendations. Awaiting word back.

Can you recommend what I need to look for as far as a generic driver?

    Many thanks for this help.

Hi Jordan, Problem solved. Apple posted a software update in the last 24 hours for the Brother. I can now use Image Capture. Thanks for your help and prompt responses.
