how to know if I need original osx disc!?
I am always looking for used iMacs on ebay/craigslist. One I am interested in has a model ID of iMac11,2. Is this a mac that needs the original OSX disc to restore?
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
That model would have shipped with a Snow Leopard DVD.
SOFTWARE
Original OS Mac OS X 10.6.3 (10D2322a)
Later OS Mac OS X 10.6.4 (10F2056, 10F2061, 10F2090, 10F2108)
The iMac11,2 shipped with Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, so you will need the original OS X disks.
You can find out more info on that machine by going to http://www.everymac.com and click iMac and then go down to the Mid-2010 hardware.
Thanks! The new imacs dont need the OSX discs tho..? What model is the cutoff?
In addition to Ralph's advice above, check out the link below.
The switchover to Lion, 10.7, occured in the summer of 2011. The machines sold during 2011 came with either Snow Leopard or Lion.
You need to get the proper disks for your purchase...if it now has Lion or Mountain Lion on it you will not be able to update the operating system since it will be permanently linked to the previous owner's Apple ID used to download and install.
So if you purchase this machine, press for the OS X disks.
