Q: Logic X Out of tune bug

I work with Logic Pro X every day since it has been released and noticed a very strange bug with both audio and software instruments (MIDI):

After saving and reloading a project Logic Pro X randomly plays audio files out of tune. It is not affecting every track, but some. I checked everything: sample rate, interface (Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2). The strange thing is: after stopping playback, starting, stopping again and starting again and opening the track in the sample window, playing it back there and so on.....everything works just fine.

Today the same with MIDI:

I saved a track some days ago. Today I reopened it. Just piano. Logic Pro X starts to insert false notes and some, not all, notes are out of tune. I checked the arrangement in the piano roll, score and event list. Everything is fine. No controllers, nothing. I even switched to another instrument and internal audio. Same result. I then moved the region to a new track (external MIDI) and played it back over USB and a ROLAND Juno-Di. Perfect. After that I exported the region as a MIDI file and imported it back to the same software instrument track were it was before. Everything works fine.

That's strange, isn't it?

The last two updates didn't correct this bug - and I really think it is a bug, because it happens to new songs and imported songs (from L9), but never happens in L9.

No third party plug-ins are involved! Just Logic! I checked that before.

I wrote a bug report for Apple and hope they will do something about it.

Anyone else with this bug?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Apple came back to me last year and asked me to supply a project with the bug. I did so, but I did not receive further notice about the progress.

I reported the bug recently. I thought I'd get an automated acknowledgement of submission, but I've not recieved anything which leaves me wondering if it was recieved.

It'd be nice to hear an acknowlegment of the issue, but I guess the dev team would be pretty busy following a big release like X.

Only on very, very rare occasions will you get an acknowledgement feedback was received, busy or not.

I have encountered this strange issue a couple times now.

To me this only seems to happen when I COPY a MIDI-region within a project. When I export the region as a MIDI-file that I later import the problem is not there. It is something about the copying that is messed up.

The only fix for this mess I have found to work consistently (when importing midi) is to drag the midi file into GarageBand, save a GB project, then open that in Logic Pro X, then do the rest of the work...

What a fiasco! Can't recommend LPX to anyone who asks me right now...

Hey folks lots of good info on here.  I too am disappointed in Apple that there hasn't been a proper solution.  A few things from my experience I'd like to add to the thread:

      -  I've had MIDI regions play out of tune intermittently in L9 for a few years now.  Never found the cause or any legitimate workarounds.

    -  Also happening when working in X with projects started in L9 or X

    -  In both cases, it is always only one or two Software Instruments (ES2, etc.) playing some or all of a region pitched either a few semitiones or in some cases an octave off.  Even within a session (without quitting & relaunching), the region will only sometimes play out of original key.  It seems to happen more frequently at particular regions in the arrangement and is more likely to happen (for me at least) when I've transposed the region in the Inspector but then returned it to +/- 0 (ie seeing how a phrase sounds and octave up/down).

    -  In these case, I've verified that region transposition is set to 0 and that the MIDI is correct in the Piano Roll

Had the same issue happen here today. Recorded a bunch of stuff with my band off a Behinger board and when I bring it back home to add additional MIDI tracks on top, occasionally what I play will go out of tune.

I'm hitting the right notes but the chords are WAY off and sound terrible. If I start a new track and re-record it sometimes it fine. Seems to happen whenever I splice a midi track and copy it as well.

Submitted a bug issue on this as well, this is very annoying bug.

10.0.7 and apparently this bug or whatever it is still is rearing it's ugly head.  Same description as some of the above posts. Logic X latest on Yosemite 10.10.1. I had  about six separate regions on one software instrument track. 2 of them when bounced were out of key. I copied the whole track and bounced it in one piece and the areas out of key remained in the resulting audio file. So I then started bouncing each region separately and was eventually able to get all the regions bounced to audio files and stay in key. Since the midi notes stay the same throughout this, it is very weird that bouncing goes haywire for certain regions when the regions themselves sound fine when left as midi tracks. I assume that it is some corruption of the particular regions that manifests when you bounce, but how odd... I have seen this occasionally before on Logic 9 and 10 on different OS versions. I thought it might have been bad plugin instruments or effects or whatever, but this seems to happen with different inserts and different software instruments.  So far though it has always been on various software "guitar" parts and no other instruments though.

Yeah, I'm getting it too. Playing live while auditioning sounds in Kontakt I get pitch drift up half to a whole step.

I have the same problem. At first I thought it was Diva putting a strain on stuff, but now it sometimes happens when I simply create one simple instrument in an empty project, say an electric piano. Okay at first and then a whole tone or so out of pitch. Copy the track and at first it is in tune, then drifting. You can hear it drift. This happens apparently randomly, sometimes with projects that had never had the problem. I can find nothing in common to narrow down the problem. It is not only a playback or recording or auditioning problem.

I have had the same problem on two computers, a Macbook, and now a new Mac mini.

Very annoying, and preventing me from getting work done. I was forced to use garage band to work on some things. Is it time to abandon Logic X, as it appears no one is listening to us?

I think that some part of the project is getting some sort of corruption that may be causing this. I haven't been able to narrow it down either other than once it starts, it seems to follow certain regions on one track.  At some point I'll have to try some extended (time consuming) troubleshooting to narrow this down.

Still no answer. Apple, there are many people with this problem. It needs addressing immediately. Is anyone listening?

These are User Only forums.... even though it may feel good to vent your frustration here, it's a waste of time. You need to call Apple, see if you can get bumped up in priority and speak to a tech... and/or use the built-in Logic feedback. In short... we can't help you or do anything about the problem.

In short, "no".. no one is listening.
