Q: How to solve: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/IP’s Mac mini.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

Hi,

 

Please help!

 

I set up my time capsule yesterday, and it worked perfectly initially.  However, after I used the same time capsule HDD as network file sharing with my MacBook Pro and two other PCs, than the hourly backup failed and gave the following error message. 

 

The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/IP’s Mac mini.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

 

Please help telling me what to do to restore the backup function.

    AirPort Time Capsule: Time Machine backups may not mount; "Backup volume cannot be found" may appear

    Followed this instructiont o change name of Time Capsule but same problem happened!

    First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.

     

    From the menu bar, select

      

    System Preferences Network

      

    Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.

     

    Try again to back up.

       

    If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

    Thanks for your help, I tried the suggestions but still cannot kill the problem.

     

    During the course of executing the suggestions, I see 3 other symptoms:

     

    - the error message is not the same as my first post:

     

      now is:      The backup image "/Volumes/Data/IP's Mac mini.sparsebundle-2" could not be accessed (error-1)

      instead of: The backup image "/Volumes/Data/IP's Mac mini.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error-1)

     

    - on "Finder" cannot see IP's Mac mini.sparsebundle under Device but can still see & access Time Capsule under   "Shared"

     

    - on Disk Utility I can see 2 Time Capsule Disk images both called IP's Mac mini.sparsebundle

     

      the first one with Disk Image Path : /Volumes/MacMiniBackUp/IP’s Mac mini.sparsebundle

     

      &

     

      the second one with Disk Image Path : /Volumes/MacMiniBackUp-2/IP’s Mac mini.sparsebundle


     

    Please see what I can do further or I shall bring it to Genius Bar.

    Hello,

     

    In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)

     

    Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.

     

    Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

    It seems that the Time Capsule is malfunctioning. I strongly suggest that you make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. You should do that anyway. One backup isn't enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.

    1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.

    2. If a backup is in progress, cancel it. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.

    3. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be permanently erased, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the TC again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
