Q: unable to use my iPhone's hotspot with other devices

when I am trying to connect other wifi devices to iPhone .... the other devices just show obtaining IP address and does not get connected to the hotspot thereafter

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.1

Are the other devices Apple products?
