Q: Itunes 11.05.5 will not home share to apple tv gen 2 ver. 5.3 (6105).  I am able to see my music but when going to computers I am told I need to turn on home sharing.  Everything worked great until I updated to the latest iTunes ver.

I have rebooted the router, restarted the computer several times, restarted apple tv twice, uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, reinstalled iTunes, rebooted, open and closed iTunes many times.  Sharing will not work on apple tv or iphone (only 2 devices I have).  I can listen to music in my library fine so I have network connectivity.  Everything worked fine until I updated to the latest version of iTunes.  I have gone through the steps found in other forums to check network, iTunes, sharing, firewall, etc.  Nothing has worked so far.  Anyone have any ideas?

If it helps, I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

As I mentioned if you just rename your ITunes directory, typically in your Musuc Folder, before uninstalling,  and rename it back after installing 11.0.4 then you won't have to rebuild anything.  Everything will come up as before.  All your playlists etc will be preserved.

There is no reason to try to install a previous version, indeed such recommendations may be dangerous. The solution is to discover what is wrong with your set up and put it right, by incorrectly identifying the problem to be a software update from Apple, you have no chance whatsoever of resolving your issue. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software.

I have 4 computers all running different versions of iTunes. (ALL are windows PCs)

They are all on the same network.

All work except the one running 11.05.5

So to say that it has been incorrectly diagnosed as a software issue is a leap.

the software may be fine, and they was a another setting added in the release.

However it is only effecting Windows PCs.

Not sure if it is specific to 64bit or specific to Win7 Pro or Not

It is working Fine in a Win7 64bit Home Prem, and an Win XP machine.

I could go through the trouble of testing in other versions in a vmware, but I have not had the time to do that.

My network is solid.  If fact I have made sure that the recommended ports are open.  I even created another connection and did not block any ports just to see if it would work.  STILL NO GO on that front.

disabling Security settings, turning off firewalls. fresh installs of the software. ect ect, all to no avail.

Completely removing ITunes and readding with a previous version of 10 worked (but i did not want to recreate everything again)

So I put 11.5.5 back on with a fresh install.  Got all my stuff back, but still no Airplay

I will try the 32 bit option first, if that doesn't work, then I will go back to 11.0.4 just to see if it works or not.

If it does then , at that point, how can you say it is not a software issue.  I would guess that there could possibly be something hidden in the registry somewhere, but I am doubting it.

I think that this should be investigated by Apple, for a reason on why this could be happening.

Let you know what I find on my version changes when I get back home from my trip

I found a blog post that resolved my issue:

This is meant for Windows 7 users.

    1. Go to the Windows/Start Menu, type “Windows Firewall With Advanced Security” into the search box. Launch this application.

    2. On the left menu bar, click on “Inbound Rules”. In the center area, look for all “Bonjour Services”. Then find Advanced >> Profiles. Make sure all 3 checkboxes (Domain, Private and Public) are checked off. Make sure Private is checked in both windows. Click apply. Note, if you don’t run Domain or you don’t know what Domain is, then make sure BOTH Public and Private are checked.

Hopefully, this will help you maintain a stable Home Sharing connection to iTunes. It did for me thank goodness.

I have finally found THE SOLUTION,, but only if you're running windows 7.

go to START, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM AND SECURITY, WINDOWS FIREWALL, ADVANCED SETTINGS (on left), click INBOUND RULES on the left, click ACTION at the top next to File, NEW RULE, click PORT, next, make sure TCP is checked and click SPECIFIC LOCAL PORTS, type in 3689, next, allow the connection, apply to all three: DOMAIN, PRIVATE, and PUBLIC, name it and finish.

NOW DO THE SAME THING AGAIN, only instead of TCP, click UDP, and type in 5353 in the SPECIFIC LOCAL PORTS, apply the same as before, and finish.

these are the ports Apple TV needs to connect to iTunes.

THIS IS ONLY IF NONE OF THE OTHER SOLUTIONS WORKED FOR YOU.

this worked for me after a month of searching.

really hope this works for you.

You Sir are a genius, thank you.

This works and I would just add the rider for everyone who will need to do this that you will probably also need to go through the turn off Homeshare on both Apple TV & pc routine, restart and turn Homeshare back on.

I am a huge fan of Apple devices but am firmly wedged in a world of Windows operating systems like much of the worlds population. I am saddened to have encountered such arrogance from the mods over this problem and such a patronising attitude to Windows users. The issue was in essence a consumer complaint and as Apple's consumer I feel very shoddily treated over ths issue.

Thank you so much. This solved it for me- the solution from kennyypop.

I too have windows 7, firewall turned off on my home private network. Apparently, you still need rules to define the inbound ports for itunes home sharing. This has been an ongoing problem for me. Glad you posted this. It was so frustrating.

    thanks !

I have a similar situation. iMac on network has all iTunes content and shares to one apple TV using Home Sharing. Before itunes 11.5.05 update I could see my Movies, Music and TV Shows directories on the Apple TV. Here are the issues after updating iTunes on iMac to 11.5.05:

    • Blew away all movie and tv show content in the iTunes UI (on iMac) even though it still resides in the same local directories in "iTunes Media" - Music remains visible. Had to "reDrag" all movies from directory back into UI for them to appear
    • Apple TV (using Home Sharing) only displays movies which I redragged into iMac iTunes UI - Does not show Music or TV Shows anymore

SO - This leads me to believe I need to reimport everything through the iTunes UI from ocal directories on my iMac OR somehow rebuild the iTunes content from that folder. Anything newly added in the new iTunes seems like it will be visible. Just haven't done this yet.

    Sound about right?

    P.S. - Nice update Apple.

    Fixed.

Rebuilt my iTunes library on the iMac.

    • Make sure you turn off 'Launch iTunes at login' in your user settings.
    • Quit iTunes
    • Relaunch holding Option key
    • It will ask you to choose your iTunes media source
    • Select 'Music > iTunes' under your user directory (or wherever your Music folder is) - DO NOT select 'Music > iTunes > iTunes Media'

That will regenerate your library file and associated xml for iTunes.

My Apple TV is now seeing all directories and content.

Sadly, this made no difference for me. Nothing has so far - not following all of the troubleshooting guides, not restarting everything, not turning off and turning back on every sharing feature... nothing.

    Beyond irritating.

Alright - after HOURS - here is what finally worked for me.

    Done in this specific order

    1. Turn off Home Sharing on appletv and iTunes, wait over a minute, and turn them back on
    2. Restart appletv
    3. Restart network router
    4. Restart iMac

Prior to the above, I had previously rebuilt my iTunes library. (I don't know if that was necessary.) I had done all of the above before, but not in that specific order.

Hopefully this will help someone else... good luck!

I am just curious if anyone knows why on 11.0.4 I had no need of opening ports for Air Play to work.   And 11.0.5 would require someone to have to mess with their windoes firewall ports....  Most users don't even know what a port is.   I have my windows firewall turned off.

I had the airplay issues with previous versions a while ago.  Tried the port things, turned it all off rebooted everything as tomasczt has done, and I got it to work for a day or two...but then I would have to do it all over agian.  Went through all this trouble shooting and spent many more hours messing about than I did enjoying using my airplay and home sharing.

11.0.4 worked 100% of the time and I had no isses.  And still don't after rolling back.  What changed?  Not my hardware.  Not any network settings.  Do both my Apple TV's and my AIrport Express need different ports for each version of iTunes?  Thought this was all behind me.... and as long as I can stay with 11.0.4 then it is all behind me.

    Well I am completely frustrated.

I have opened up ALL ports on my router. (as previously stated I can airplay from other libraries on the same network)

I have not configured any firewall settings on those computers but I have tried on the main one.

I have configured application and port rules in SEP (Symantec Endpoint Protection) and that did not work

I disabled SEP and configured firewall rules, still no go

I turned both those off and still no go

I did even go back to 11.04.4 and still am unable to airplay.

I will be moving in a month so I guess I will continue to transfer movies to other applications for streaming until I move and hopefully can get to the bottom of this when I set everything back up again.

It is very frustrating that 3 other PCs using various versions (all before 11.4.4) are able to stream on the same network that the Windows 7 64 bit premium is on.

The only differences is the itunes version, the OS, and the addition of the SEP., and the model of device.

I will also be updating the BIOS and switching to a crucial SSD at the same time of the network changes (adding a 20TB NAS [ prob starting with 15TB ]) but when I move everything to the one location and host iTunes from one device maybe I will have more luck

FYI I am not a strager to the apple devices.  This household has , 2 apple TVs, 6 ipads, 1 touch 4th gen, 2 shuffles, 1 ipod clasic, 2 iphone 5's, 2 iphone 4S's.

I do think that I will be getting a MAC mini to host all the iTunes though.  Just seems that there is less trouble with that.

Although I am embedded in the Windows world, I work heavily in the Unix environment as well.

I thank all for their replies and helpful tips, but at this point I am still dead in the water
