Q: Itunes 11.05.5 will not home share to apple tv gen 2 ver. 5.3 (6105).  I am able to see my music but when going to computers I am told I need to turn on home sharing.  Everything worked great until I updated to the latest iTunes ver.

I have rebooted the router, restarted the computer several times, restarted apple tv twice, uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, reinstalled iTunes, rebooted, open and closed iTunes many times.  Sharing will not work on apple tv or iphone (only 2 devices I have).  I can listen to music in my library fine so I have network connectivity.  Everything worked fine until I updated to the latest version of iTunes.  I have gone through the steps found in other forums to check network, iTunes, sharing, firewall, etc.  Nothing has worked so far.  Anyone have any ideas?

If it helps, I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

It took a couple of restarts of Itunes for mine to show up on both computers. I also changed all my existing Bonjour services to include private, domain and public like bykim76 described just above kennypop. Not sure which one of those fixed it but it seems to be working fine now.

Both. I wasn't able to share with any of them before I made the changes with 11.05.5.

I have the same issue.  No AirPlay from iTunes to AppleTV with the following:

PC: Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit.  iTunes: 11.05.05  Apple TV: v5.3

I have tried almost everything from iTunes reinstalls to firewall disabling, multiple reboots, etc.  Nothing will get iTunes to Airplay to my Apple TV.

Airplay works from my iphone (iOS 6.1.2) to my AppleTV.

And if I turn on AirPlay on the Apple TV I can see the icon appear in iTunes, if I turn it off in ATV, it disappears from iTunes, so there is some communication/detection happening.

But if I select my ATV, there is a delay of 5 to 10 seconds and then a message box appears stating the connection can not be made because of a connection issue or it has timed out.

I even set the ATV "Onscreen Code" on. and when I select the ATV from iTunes it displays the 4 digit number to enter.  I enter the number and after 5 seconds, it reports it times out... So Apple whats happening here?

Now the reverse direction is possible.  Via homeSharing, I can see my iTunes libary from Apple TV under Computers (HomeSharing has to be on in both ATV and iTunes), and I through this I can select and play movies or music on the ATV.  Not ideal, but possible.

I believe it started when iTunes was last updated to v11.05.05.

Just to prove it, I started up an older VMWare session on the PC. The VM runs XP and has iTunes 10.6.1.7.   It bridges to the Host System (Win 7 Ultimate) network interface card. I was able to easily send music and a movie to the AppleTV, so Airplay works just fine from this version.

Clearly this is an iTunes 11.05.05 problem with Apple TV 5.3

PS Apple Admins, I hope you getting the message... many people posting about this.  It is a problem with the release of iTunes, not a configuration issue.

I am willing to send you any diagnostics or log files so you can see what is happening, just let me know the tools/steps to follow and I'll send you log files.  Note: I have wireshark, just tell me the filter strings to use.

I have tried the most obvious troubleshooting, so please don't suggest I change or add to the firewall (as it makes no difference even if it is off), reboot the computer, router, ATV (been there done this many times), or reinstall iTunes (yes done this 2x).

What is really interesting is that I also have "AirParrot" and this works just fine to put my PC screen on my ATV, but iTunes 11.05.05 can not send a movie or music....this just reinforces the problem is an iTunes issue.

Do look at Kennypop's solution on page 2 of this thread, that worked for me as it has for a few others with this issue.

    Hope it works for you.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2, and everything was working perfectly. Suddenly my Home Sharing is sporadically showing as offline from my Apple TV (2nd Generation). One minute I can watch a movie, and the next...it can't apparently find any sharing on the network. There is no problem on my network, and my PC does not go to sleep. I have tried all of the various suggestions, I have added all of the ports that iTunes needs, etc. etc.

I can stream a movie from the iTunes Store without any issues, but with my Internet speed, that means waiting for quite a while before I can see something that I have purchased.

I don't understand how if nothing has changed on my end, apart from an update to both iTunes and the Apple TV's software, that I was prompted to install...how Apple can deny that the problem is on their side???

I tried Kennypop's firewall rules.  Rebooted etc. no change. I only have windows firewall, and turning the firewall off makes no difference.  Still stumped.  It would be helpful if there were better diagnostic tools or a better error message and a way to log the sequences.  Seems iTunes has this for syncing with devices, but not for airplay.

I tried the bykim76 solution before trying the more involved one which followed.  Changed to both private and public because I was not sure about also selecting domain. Restarted the computer and other computers on network now showed up in iTunes - thank you!!!!

Ok, so here is what FIXED my problem, on my router configs, there is something called IGMP Proxy, under the advanced tab, once I disabled that, my library poped up on both my iphones and apple tv, I hope that helps somebody else. By the way, my router is the MI424WR from Verizon fios. Good luck guys!!!

I too have the same issue. I turn off and on the home sharing in iTunes (11.1) on my iMac running 10.8.5, It asks for my password to the iStore but it goes nowhere. I go to the wifi network and turn it off and on and couple times and the message finally gets through to Apple TV. Since my computer and tv are in separate rooms I push the play button and make sure its switch to apple tv and I hear the music. I also have a laptop (Macb00k) running the identical and it works fine. Now I go to my iPad and iPhone which is up to date and I can't play my songs on AirPlay. I also updated the AppleTV software. What the **** has Apple done???!!!

OK, I found the solution to the iOS devices which I think is pretty silly on Apple. You need to slide up on the device window to control panel and switch it to airplay. This option shows nowhere on the "now playing" window which I think is a major mistake. Nor does it show in the settings menu. Now here is the funny part. I turn off the AppleTV on my computers AND the iOS devices and music continues to play. The only way I could stop it is to unplug the AppleTV box. These things are possessed! I'm not really happy with the iTunes updates since 2 updates ago. Too many moves to put stuff on your iOS devices. It used to be a lot simpler 2 years ago.

Ok, after trying the port changes and the downgrading to lower itunes, the most simple thing fixed it. I had to have my wireless on my laptop turned on. Which is odd because I've never used the wireless because it;s right beside my router/modem and has worked previously with my ATV. However, after tring all those tips they did fail for me, but just a simple switch of the wifi and boom watching WWZ on the ATV. Thanks for posting all those comments guys, it is a help when even I can't fix it and I used to work for apple. ;o)

    Thank GOODNESS!!!

I thought I was going crazy, as of 3 days ago my connection dropped out and I haven't been able to play anything from my PC (Windows 7) to my Apple TV (Gen 2).

    I've done the following:

Reset all setting on my Apple TV

Reset my wireless router (4 times)

    Changed my Apple ID password

    Restarted my laptop

    Restarted Apple TV

Logged into Home Sharing on Apple TV then iTunes

Logged into Home Sharing on iTunes then Apple TV

Clicked Share everything on my PC and through iTunes

Screamed and cursed the world, may have even thrown an object or two

    Things not yet done:

Regressed to older version of iTunes

THROWN PC AND APPLE TV OUT THE WINDOW!

    Cried......

The only thing that I can see that is the issue is that the IP addresses won't match up!

I had a similar issue last time they updated itunes but it fixed itself once I reset my wireless router.  I've tried numerous times to set the IP address manually on my Apple TV to match my PC and it then tells me there is no internet connection!  I hope regressing to an older version of iTunes will help with this issue because I'm at my wits end and I really don't have the time to go to an Apple store after making an appointment to be told they can't do anything or that there isn't any known problem!

I have also finally had success streaming from my iphone and ipad.....but nothing more

Thank you for sharing and I'll let everyone know if using an older version of iTunes helps!
