I ALSO can't thank you enough for taking your valuable time to outline these housekeeping, mac maintenance WISE steps.  I have tried mackeeper and gotten rid of it right away.  I find all of your points extremely valuable.  I DID NOT know about the difference between JavaScript and Java - thus I have given erroneous advice to friends and family telling them they needed to disable ANYTHING that said Java.  Now I know.  ALSO I find your comments as to WHAT NOT TO DO, WHO NOT TO LISTEN TO, WHAT TO AVOID like the plague - extremely, let me say it again, EXTREMELY valuable.  Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!  I have wondered about all these issues.  I had fallen into the trap of always verifying and repairing permissions right after installing any software updates or installing any new software etc.  I am so grateful to understand how unnecessary this is.  Permissions have been one of my biggest headaches trying to research and understand more about them.  Your explanation about cache memory was VERY timely for me as I had been using DevonThinkPro Office 2 for some time and after learning some things by painful trial and error I had just recently had an issue of my startup disk becoming almost full and then scarily actually full.  I had been using bitcasa infinite virtual drive storage and had been saving and working with Databases I made and use through DevonThink.  I had fallen into a trap of clearing the bitcasa "cache" when uploading, moving, copying was slowing to molasses.  I learned to make smaller databases - more of them - rather than one gigantic one.  I learned to just move or copy small amounts of data (patiently) at a time - which makes the whole process go so much faster anyway.  I learned to avoid telling Bitcasa to copy whole drives of data or large amounts at once - which would then take over and take days and days with me wondering if it was unresponsive and should I interrupt and stop it or what.... etc etc.  So now that I am slicing maintenance chores into very small bites - ha!  bytes!!!  ha ha.... my patience is tried less and I get to the actual END of jobs much quicker with less stress.  Anyway your explanation about leaving the cache alone to its own devices was very helpful.  I didn't know it would automatically clear itsself every "x" often!  That's great.  I just had to take the time to thank you.  I think in my case reading your feedback was exceptionally enlightening after I had actually experienced alot of what you describe and decry!  Although I would have liked to have read it ahead of many yucky experiences, it may be better absorbed and "stick" better now that I can completely relate to everything you discussed, having been through alot of the terrible explorations myself, or having at least done alot of digging and research trying to understand every concept you outline here.  THANK YOU for consolidating it all here in one EXCELLENT place! Have a great 2013 Winter Holiday!
