Q: Raw Update 4.08 removes distortion correction for Sony RX100 files?

I loaded raw update 4.08 on my 27 inch iMac yesterday. A while later, I opened Aperture 3 to export some RX100 files from a family event last week to Smugmug. To my horror, as the photos loaded when I viewed them, the automatically applied lens distortion correction was removed and obviously it was worst with the wide ones. The issue also shows up in iPhoto, so it seems a general OS thing. To confirm it was indeed due to the raw update, I exported the same raw files to my MacBook Air, which I hadn't updated yet. Sure enough, Aperture loaded them with distortion correction just fine. Obviously, I won't be updating the MacBook until this issue is fixed.

Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Thanks for the heads up on this. Very frustrating if Apple keep breaking it!

That's annoying! You know what's weird though? This time around, I don't seem to be effected. I just checked very thoroughly using some images I remember very specifically being messed up last time. My iPhoto is working correctly and I have the latest Software Updates installed including 5.02 RAW support.

I wonder if it has anything to do with iPhoto or OS X version? I have the latest iPhoto, and I'm running Mavericks 10.9.1 currently.

The last time this happened, it was super obvious on my notebook because my GPU is a little slow and what would happen is the images would load up properly, and then suddenly "revert" before my eyes to the frustrating distorted view (I imagine what I was first seeing was a preliminary render or some iPhoto preview file, likely a small JPEG).

This time, when I check, not only do my images look fine, but this obvious "change" doesn't seem to be happening.

I called Apple on this and they know that it is an issue. My files only effect RX100 RAW files. My Canon 5D Mark III RAW files are apparently okay. Hopefully I will hear from them in a week or so. I have Digital Camera RAW 5.01 on a MacPro that works just fine. It's just version 5.02 that has an issue. The annomoly can be duplicated in Image Capture software in the OS.

I am so glad that I found this thread. I got a new Sony RX100 and was about to send it back, as the RAW result in Aperture was so miserable. With the downgrade of the RAW Bundle to 5.0.1 everything is as expected, great results, great camera!

YIKES never mind what I said earlier, after a recent reboot my iPhoto is horribly ugly all over again.

Guess it's time to download the previous version of RAW support and revert, again.

    Thank goodness for this thread.

Good news everyone! Apple fixed (again) this issue in Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03, released Jan 16, 2014:

"This update adds RAW image compatibility for the following camera to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11:

    Canon EOS M2

    It also includes fixes that:

Resolve an issue that prevented lens correction from working properly with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images

Address a color cast issue on some Olympus OM-D E-M1 images

For more information on supported RAW formats, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5955."
