i have had my ipod touch 4gen for 3 years now and i can barely see anything on my screen because of how cracked it is. will apple fix it for free?

No. Not only is it way past the warranty but damage caused by the user is not covered. A replacement iPod is $99, or if you have the 64GB model, $199.
