4th generation ipod keeps cycling through songs without playing

I have an iPod 4th generation 20 GB that I haven't used in quite awhile. I got it out, charged it, BUT no sound, songs keep cycling. I can choose one occasionally, but no sound. I've tried the Hold switch approach, but nothing. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
