Q: How do I know which version of the firmware for airport utility I have

I have an imac and an Airport Time Machine.  I just bought an airport express in order to extend the range of the WiFi in my house.  Everytime the airport utility tries to configure teh airport express, I get an unexpected error message.  I have checked the support site and think I need the latest firmware update fort eh airport.  I have the airport utility set up to updaate automatically weekly, and upon opening the utility, but don't know if I have the latest firmware.  When I click the "about airport utility" it tells me I have version 6.3.1(631.4), but I am suspicious that it is not the current version.  Does anyone have any way for me to check? and does anyone have any idea why I keep getting the unexpected errormessage?  thank you.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I have an AEX with recently updated firmware of 7.6.4. How old is the AEX your purchased? When you open Airport Utility you should have an update awaiting for the AEX firmware.

Is AEX Airport Extreme?  I have an Airport Time Machine, I bought 4 years ago.

AEX is Airport Express. Airport Extreme is AEBS. You cannot have an Airport Time Machine, but you could have a Time Capsule. Time Machine is just backup software.

Thanks for the clarification.  I have a Time Capsule which has both a Time machine software, and the airport base ststion, and I bought the AEX :-) a few weeks ago.  I am having trouble setting it up becasue of teh unexpected error message i keep getting.

When you open Airport Utility click on the Time Capsule image and note the version of the firmware. Usually, if there's a firmware update it should show up for you to upgrade it. Also, check the Airport Express. The latest AEX firmware is 7.6.4, I believe. It may be different for the newest AEX models.

Firmware version 6.3 is from 2006/7 and is pretty old. It should be updated.
